God Was Toothless That Day...

They always said God lies in every innocent smile.  I promised that old woman before St. Antony’s Shrine, Kaloor to buy candles. After the novena, I found her nowhere. After a long search I found her struggling to sell the packets. I bought a packet and got a beautiful and innocent toothless smile in return.

Tulasi Of Achyutan

Top post on IndiBlogger.in, the community of Indian Bloggers

Tulasi was the most beautiful girl of Achyutan’s college. He still remembered when he saw her first at the corridor, with a pile of certificates. It was her name, which was announced first by the principal. Achyutan was an intellectual guy by all standards, but his dark and short look always prevented him from being an extrovert, which the college-life ostensibly demanded.  He was thrilled to see her in his classroom on the very first bench. Achyutan always used to wonder, about the feeling he had for Tulasi.  Achyutan couldn’t make out a difference between love and devotion. He gazed at her in wonder with an open mouth, when she came to the library and sat just in front of him. He had seen many guys proposing her. Most of them were fair and handsome. Raghuvaran, the handsomest chap of the college, used to sing beautifully and Tulasi was one among his fans. Achyutan had also seen Tulasi talking to Raghuvaran in person. That was enough for Achyutan to fix their marriage in his mind.

Achyutan sighed and leaned on the chair. He closed his eyes and caressed his grey hair. He saw Tulasi, smiling at him. He too, reciprocated the smile. He hardly talked to anybody, but couldn’t utter anything when Tulasi was around. He never knew what happened to him when she was nearby. He used to stammer, shiver and went wrong in everything that he did. He felt guilty for thinking bad about Tulasi, when he saw her talking with Bhraman and Devan. Both the guys used to smoke and drink. Achyutan had seen Bhraman and Devan coming out of the Toddy shop besides their college. Thereafter Achyutan didn’t talk to Tulasi for long. He ignored her, when she came to talk to him. Tulasi never knew what had happened to Achyutan and why he was behaving weirdly.  Achyutan realized that he had become possessive about Tulasi, but he feared to tell her. It would have broken Achyutan, if she denied his proposal.

Achyutan felt bad when once they enacted Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and he was given the role of Claudius, the villain. Raghuvaran played the role of Hamlet and Tulasi, that of Ophelia. He remembered the farewell party, arranged by the juniors. She was wearing a pretty white gown. She looked no less than a princess. He had planned and by-hearted the words in order to propose her. He rehearsed, and as he walked towards the hall, he saw and heard Raghuvaran proposing her. He remembered how much he cried on that day at home. He never told his mom, why he cried on that day. He wrote every exam monotonously, as if he longed to get out of the college somehow. He never went to the college again.

Somebody woke him up from his sleep. As he opened his eyes, he saw Tulasi standing before him with a cup of Tea...

GauriShankharam-The Unspoken Syllables

It had been more than a month after their marriage, yet Shankhar and Gauri couldn’t talk much to each other. They hardly shared words, rather lingered on syllables. Unlike other arranged-marriage couples, they didn’t enjoy the art of jabbering, even after their engagement. Gauri was the daughter of Retd.Col. Devadatta and Dr.Malathi, both of whom took utmost care, that their daughter never got exposed to the men folk, during her academics. This might be one of the reasons why she fought with Prof.Balakrishnan, her colleague, just for simply praising her beauty. Her feminist mind couldn’t stand such things. On the other hand Shankhar was no less than a traditional male chauvinist, parented by Adv.Achuthan Namboodiri and Devaki Varasyar, who was a home maker. It had always kept Shankhar, the project leader at Infopark, in wonder, as how Achuthan Namboodiri chose his daughter-in law to be a working woman, which Shankhar never preferred. Both the families were happy to have the new comers, except the newly wedded pair, both of whom were ardent lovers of late marriage, and to get married in their 20’s was never their cup of tea.

Just after their marriage, they shifted to a 3 bedroom furnished apartment in Kochi, as their job locations were equally accessible from there. Both were busy with their pile of works, and they never found themselves dependant on each other. The teachings of Dr.Malathi had always helped Gauri to prevent her feminism overrule her mind, so that she woke up early, and by the time Shankhar was on the dining table with his newspaper, he got his Bru-Coffee, with just a pinch of sugar. She was a good cook, which always kept Shankhar’s tummy satisfied. Every morning, Shankhar used to drop her to the college, and always took special care, not to get late in the evening. It was for the first time, that Shankhar brought eggs home, just for Gauri, who had her heart on it. The first week was terrible for Gauri, who used to sleep with her parents all her life, now had to sleep with a man who is known to her parents more. Shankhar too felt an uneasiness and lack of freedom, but he never disturbed Gauri. Soon Gauri felt the silent company comfortable enough. The only thin, they never forgot to give each other was a smile.

It was on a Friday, that Shankhar informed her about the change in his working hours and that from the next Monday, he would be on night shifts.  Before she could speak, he also told her that he had already arranged Malathi Chechi to come and stay with her during nights and that Murukesh will pick her home in the evenings. She had nothing more to get concerned about, but felt some unknown restlessness inside. On the Monday, she woke up much earlier, and by the time Shankhar was on the dining table, besides the breakfast and his Bru-Coffee, even the lunch was ready. On their way to the college, they went to Anchumana temple. As he drove back, he felt an immense loneliness. He felt the house to be very quiet and empty. He went to the bedroom, tried sleeping, but then woke up and took their wedding album from that wooden cupboard. As he skimmed through the photos, he smiled at the seriousness on the face of Gauri. For the first time, he saw her that close, and found his wife to be very beautiful. He engaged himself in the household duties, and when got tired, slept for a while. A ring on the door woke him up. It was Murukesh, the driver. Shankhar hurried to dress up. He found the lunch to be more delicious. He locked the door and handed the key to Murukesh and asked him not to be late in the evening at any cost. On the way he called Malathi Chechi.

As Gauri stepped out of the college gate, she found Murukesh waving at her. As she sat on the back seat for the first time, she found the vehicle to be extremely void. She found her favourite cousin Malathi Chechi waiting for her, on the steps of their apartment. As they entered, she found the room to be tidier and the floor dust free. As she went to the kitchen to get Malathi Chechi some tea, she found all the utensils washed and neatly arranged. She handed over the cup to Malathi Chechi and went into the bedroom, and found all clothes washed and ironed. She sat on the bed, and the tears on her cheeks surprised her. She always loved to sleep with Malathi Chechi, who was her world during her childhood. She used to listen to everything that Gauri spoke. Malathi wondered why Gauri was silent on that night. Gauri felt insecure even in the presence of Malathi. She felt incomplete.

Love develops from silences....

She Left In The Rain...

She Left In The Rain Without My Umbrella
Creating A Deep Negated Space In My Spirits,
The Miles I Covered Still Lay Green In History,
But Her Smile Was Still Throbbing Somewhere,
As Her Eyes Mused A Hymn To Soothe My Brain,
I Walked Alone, Enjoying Life’s Pungent Sarcasms,
& Nature Being That Unpaid Event Manager, Had
Already Set The Aura Of An Utopian Melancholy,
Making Me Appreciate, That Even 2 Months Skip,
Faster Than The Sound Waves, & As Her Distant
Voice Drenched Me Then, Night Stayed Boisterous,
& Dawn Left My Reveries As Unanswered Soliloquies,
& I Wait With Anticipation, For That Next Friday Evening...

The Mizzles Of Yesterday

Life Seems To Have Shed Its Unusual Surprises, As
Time Needles Turned Monotonous & Predictable,
& Even Dimples Have Been Roofed By The Pimples.
Cramped To Religion, Work, Food & Love Making,
It’s Just Another Cabaret Performed By Freaky Soul.
Edifices Are Being Planted & Watered Everyday &
Computer Language Has Become A National Idiom.
The Dumb Planet Just Chats, But Cease To Converse,
Where Science Has Become Cancerous To All Species
Amidst All, I Wish To Be That Grasshopper Under That,
White Mushroom, Enjoying The Mizzles Of Yesterday.

That Smile...

That Smile Dabs Away My Unseen Whimpers
& For A While The Wall Clock Asks Me The Time
Then I Lay Drenched In The Rain Of A Sunny Day
& The Zephyr Chills My Soul For No Better Reason,
But It’s Not Dark Now, As I Close My Shadowed Eyes
Since I Have To Open It To Amass New Dew Drops,
From The Lush Green Of That Fresh Wintery Dawn.
The Calendar Dates Start Fluttering Like Butterflies
As I Wait For The Hissing Friday On That Platform
To Get That Glimpse & Treasure It For A Week Long.
